Installation of Public Electric Car Chargers

Increasing the availability of electric vehicle charging stations for public use removes a barrier to businesses and citizens switching from fossil fuel vehicles. With more zero emission vehicles on the road, air quality could be improved by reducing ground level-ozone that contribute to public health problems, and carbon emissions that contribute to climate change.

Idea

To reduce impediments for potential electric vehicle drivers, the City of Whitehall should increase the number of EV charging stations available for public use. As of now, there are three charging stations within Whitehall’s city limits, mostly near the edges. These stations reside at Byers Imports, Audi of Columbus, and Dick Masheter Ford. There is also a fourth station just outside the limits at a walgreens at 3583 East Broad Street. Allowing greater access to local charging stations can reduce barriers keeping prospective EV owners from transitioning from gasoline vehicles. Installing the stations on or near public offices can also encourage the city to upgrading obsolete fleet vehicles to full electric or plug-in hybrid models.

Goal

Install one or more electric charging stations available for government and public use.

Objectives

  1. Identify potential sites for electric vehicle charging stations.
  2. Assess costs of installation and maintenance of electric vehicle charging stations.
  3. Install electric vehicle charging stations and increase public awareness of the infrastructure.

Connection to Other Plans

This idea potentially addresses the following elements of the MORPC Regional Sustainability Agenda:

Element Description Rationale
1.3 Increase the percentage of vehicles using alternative fuels. Charging stations could encourage residents to switch to electric powered vehicles.
1.5 Increase the number of alternative fuel stations. See Idea description.
2.1 Reduce emissions to meet federal air quality standards. Encouraging residents to switch to electric vehicles will reduce tailpipe emissions within Whitehall.
